Responding officials discovered 39 dogs, described as German shepherds, who were living on two properties, one of which was owned by a suspected breeder, 43-year-old Dawn Verdeschi.
Verdeschi's breeding operation was discovered by the owner of the house, Deborah Albanese, who visited her rental house this past weekend.
Albanese described her disgust over the conditions that she found inside:
You didn't even know where a dog was until it started to bark,My eyes started to water. That's how bad the smell is."
Authorities from the Greene County Sheriff's Office and the Columbia-Greene Humane Society found deplorable conditions inside of not one, but two houses where the dogs were being kept.
Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley stated:
Really, in my 30-year career in law enforcement, this is the worst animal abuse case I've seen,There was cages on top of cages with dogs in each of the cages. There was feces on top of the dogs that was running down.
Verdeschi refused to voluntarily surrender the dogs so the authorities seized them; the dogs are now being held at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society.
On Monday morning, the Columbia-Greene Humane Society stated:
All 39 dogs were surrendered to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, and are available for adoption. For people interested in adopting one of these dogs, please visit the shelter’s website atwww.cghs.org and fill out a pre-approval application, or call the shelter at 518-828-6044.
Verdeschi is facing multiple charges following Sunday's seizure, including animal cruelty.
